Local elections are changing America's energy mix, one city at a time
Posted on Recent news by Lukas Oktaba · November 04, 2020 3:30 PMRenewable energy just won in a few local elections
"Local races can go a long way toward changing how Americans get their electricity. After yesterday’s election, both the city of Columbus, Ohio, and township of East Brunswick, New Jersey, are projected to pass measures that allow their local governments, instead of utilities, to decide where residents’ power comes from.
These 'community choice' programs are boosting the growth of cheap renewable energy and are already prying loose investor-owned utilities’ tight grip on energy markets in places like California. More and more of these programs are popping up in states where they’re allowed, and they’re expected to grow beyond those borders in the future."

Editorial: Vote for police review, clean power, ADAMH levy
Posted on Recent news by Lukas Oktaba · October 08, 2020 5:05 PM"The other citywide question before Columbus voters, Issue 1, seeks approval of a charter amendment to pool the purchase of electric power through AEP Energy for 15 years with the understanding that it would secure 100% clean energy from local wind and solar projects by 2022. Even if the issue is approved, individual consumers could opt out of the aggregation and choose their own power supplier.
Electric power aggregation is a growing strategy for municipalities to offer their residents lower rates through economies of scale. A similar issue is on the ballot for Grove City residents, and Worthington already has electric power aggregation.
Even better is the goal set in the aggregation proposal for AEP Energy to provide power from clean energy sources in the future. With the state and federal governments pulling back from environmentally friendly energy policies, municipalities are right to adopt green energy programs of their own.
There is no cost to taxpayers for aggregating electric power in one provider."

Ohio Citizen Action endorses Issue 1 - Columbus Aggregation
Posted on Recent news by Lukas Oktaba · September 29, 2020 4:20 PMCOLUMBUS -- At a press conference today, Ohio environmental experts and advocates launched the YES on Columbus Community Choice Aggregation Campaign (Issue 1). Ohio Citizen Action enthusiastically endorses Issue 1 because of both its near and long-term benefits for Columbus area residents, businesses, jobs and the environment. The issue has gained the endorsement of 10 major environmental group and we urge Columbus voters to pass Issue 1 in November.
“Our members are happy to see Columbus get on the aggregation bandwagon,” said Rachael Belz, executive director, Ohio Citizen Action. “OCA strongly supports passage of Issue 1 because it just makes sense: affordability for consumers and job creation for Columbus that also results in cleaner air and water. This will be the largest aggregation program in the Midwest, showing other major cities how good policy is done with community support. It’s time to pass Issue 1!”
