Together, We Just Made Ohio Energy Cleaner and More Affordable
After years of persistent advocacy, we've achieved the repeal of the OVEC coal subsidies as part of House Bill 15, a significant overhaul of Ohio's energy system.
How We Won
This triumph wasn't handed to us—it was earned through relentless grassroots organizing:
- 34,968 doors knocked across Ohio neighborhoods
- 7,824 face-to-face conversations that changed minds and hearts
- 2,195 calls and 192 letters that flooded legislators' offices
- 113 powerful video testimonials from Ohioans
- 1,350 emails demanding accountability
- 222 patch-through calls connecting voters directly with their representatives
Each number represents a person—a neighbor, a parent, a student, a retiree—who believed that their voice mattered. And they were right.
The repeal of these subsidies means millions of dollars will remain in the pockets of hardworking families instead of propping up obsolete and polluting coal plants.
The Real Impact of House Bill 15
For over six years, the repercussions of House Bill 6 have fallen on Ohioans' shoulders, and now, we've ended another major component of that corruption scandal. Thanks to your advocacy, Ohio is moving toward a more modern, transparent, and accountable energy system.
This legislation delivers long overdue reforms to Ohio's energy policy:
- Cost Savings: Immediate repeal of the OVEC coal bailout (Legacy Generation Resource Rider) that subsidized outdated, polluting coal facilities
- Improved Reliability: Promotes investment in Advanced Transmission Technologies to achieve higher capacity out of the existing transmission grid
- Increased Utility Accountability: Improves transparency and establishes stronger reliability standards requiring utilities to heat map and track outages at the local level
- School Efficiency Support: Offers low-interest loans for solar energy and efficiency upgrades in schools
- Promotes Fairness: Transitions Ohio away from Electric Security Plans (ESPs), which utilities have used to charge customers excessive riders and fees
The Ohio Citizen Action Difference
Ohio Citizen Action empowered Ohioans to create change. Our organizers provided the information, tools, and support that transformed individuals into collective power.
We didn't just advocate for change—we built a collective effort where your story became our strength.
This victory proves what's possible when we combine people power with strategic action.
Congratulations, Ohio!
