The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is tasked with representing the interests of cooperative electric utilities and their consumers. An electric cooperative is owned by its customers. Unlike an investor-owned utility, each customer has an equal say in the running of the co-op, rather than having a level of input commensurate with the amount of investment.
Electric cooperatives usually operate in rural areas, which investor-owned utilities are reluctant to cover because of the capital costs involved in building infrastructure and providing service to large, sparsely-populated areas.
From January 1, 2005 to June 30, 2007, employees of and political action committees associated with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and its affiliate, the Ohio Action Committee for Rural Electrification, contributed $24,285 to current members of the Ohio General Assembly and statewide officeholders. Of the contributions to the General Assembly, $14,835 went to the House, and $8,750 to the Senate. These same entities also contributed $2,750 to the two major political parties.
