National Federation of Independent Business

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is a national organization that represents small businesses throughout the United States. In contrast to chambers of commerce, the NFIB is organized in a top-down fashion. Instead of hundreds of member groups in coalition, the NFIB is one national group. In this type of organizational model, the interests of members can get lost in the ideology of the leadership of the group. In 2001, the NFIB was the third most powerful pressure group nationally, according to a survey sent by Fortune magazine to every member of Congress, Capitol Hill staffers, White House aides, and lobbyists.

From January 1, 2005 to June 30, 2007, the NFIB contributed a total of $43,250 to Ohio's current General Assembly members ($29,413 to the House, and $31,400 to the Senate) and statewide officeholders, in addition to $21,350 to Ohio's two major political parties.
