About Us
Global Action on ArcelorMittal is a network of community and environmental groups from around the world who are working to get ArcelorMittal to invest in pollution prevention and health and safety at its steel mills and coal and iron ore mines.
ArcelorMittal is the largest private steel company in the world, owning 10 percent of world steel production. While the company continues to buy new steel plants, it has failed to addres the pollution and health and safety problems at the plants it already owns. Steelworkers and communities around the world have been dealing with the problems of soot, odors, noise, and health problems from the pollution from ArcelorMittal mills.
In May 2008, environmental and community groups from Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, South Africa, and the United States, along with representatives from CEE Bankwatch Network met in Luxembourg at the company's annual shareholders meeting. At the meeting, Global Action on ArcelorMittal handed out a case study titled "In the wake of ArcelorMittal: The global giant's local impacts," detailing the problems nine communities are dealing with as a result of the company's activities. Global Action on ArcelorMittal continues to work together to get the company to address these problems with community groups involved. If you are dealing with pollution from ArcelorMittal mill and would like to get involved in this campaign, contact Sunita Dubey at sunita(at)groundwork-usa.org.
