Stacy Smith, KDKA: Mr. Vice President, do you keep
your promises?
Vice President Al Gore: Yes, I do.
Smith: Then what is your reaction or
response to the people of East Liverpool, Ohio, who say in 1992, when you
were running for Vice President, you said that you would prefer not to have
and should not have Waste
Technologies Incorporated operate its
plant being built there. They
say you broke your promise on that.
Gore: Well, what some of them don't
say is that from the time that
statement was made to the
inauguration, something else
intervened. In December of that
year, the Bush-Quayle Administration
went ahead and passed the threshold
and issued the permit. So, the legal
ability to stop that permit was
removed because the last
administration went ahead and did it
after the election, but before the
inauguration.
