Environmental Justice Tour

Case Western Reserve Medical Students and Mittal Steel Neighbors

Tuesday, March 21, 2006

An educational tour was planned by Sujan Reddy of Case Western Reserve University. Through the course of the day, first and second year medical students were introduced to the concept of Environmental Justice - the disproportionate burden of environmental waste borne by poor, minority communities. In attendence were seven medical students: Dan Einstein, Eun Huh, Nick Tosi, Patrick Eliot, Parag Vora, Eugene Liu, Vishal Patel; two student coordinators -Connie Liu and Sujan Reddy; and one narrator/tour guide -David Wright from the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes.

The Environmental Tour model is a project designed by the American Medical Student Association which has been piloted at several medical schools, including Yale University School of Medicine and the University of Michigan School of Medicine. These workshops have been successful in demonstrating to students the link between environment and health. The tour included personal testimony by neighbors of Mittal Steel and was an ideal opportunity to teach community issues to students who are tomorrow’s community leaders.
