Rubbertown, Louisville, Kentucky vigil

RUBBERTOWN, LOUISVILLE, KY -- On December 4, people from Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Colorado and Texas converged on Louisville to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal chemical massacre. The Rubbertown community in the west end of Louisville is surrounded by 11 chemical companies. Sampling conducted by REACT, a group of Rubbertown neighbors, showed that the levels of toxic chemicals in the air are 800 times worse than the federal standard for human health. Louisville has the worst air in the southeast United States, according to the U.S. EPA. On Saturday, volunteers went door-to-door, talking with Rubbertown neighbors, and collected 447 postcards urging the Louisville Air Pollution Control Board to pass a toxic air pollution reduction program. During an evening vigil at the Dow/Dupont Chemical plant, REACT member Tim Duncan spoke by phone with a community leader in Bhopal. Duncan finished the vigil saying "if we are going to take on multinational companies, we must have multinational coalitions," Ruth Breech, Ohio Citizen Action.
