WASHINGTON (AFX) - US intelligence has received "uncorroborated" information
of a terrorist threat to a US nuclear power plant on the July 4 weekend, a US
official said.
"It's uncorroborated information of questionable reliability," the official
told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. "That said we take any threat
seriously."
The Washington Times said intelligence agencies received information last
week that an Islamic terrorist group was plotting an attack on either the Three
Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania or another nuclear plant in the
northeastern United States during the July 4 celebrations.
The US official confirmed that information received pointed to a threat to
a US nuclear power plant on the July 4 weekend, but noted that the intelligence
community often receives threat information pegged to next big holiday.
"I would not make too much of this. We constantly receive threat
information, and we evaluate it accordingly. While we can't be dismissive of
it, there are questions about its reliability," the official said.
