Superload Coming Through
On Thursday, July 18, the
reactor head cover for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant will pass
through the Toledo area on its way to its final destination. At 9:00
a.m., the superload will enter Ohio from Michigan on U.S. 23. The
travel route is as follows: U.S. 23, Interstate 475/U.S. 23 south to
Interstate 75, north on I-75 to State Route 795, east on S.R. 795 to
Interstate 280, north on I-280 to State Route 2, Navarre Avenue,
east on S.R. 2 to the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant near Oak
Harbor.
Motorists should avoid these
routes if at all possible. The speed of the superload and its
associated escort will be very slow, even reduced to "walking speed"
as it crosses bridges on the route. Motorists will encounter
extremely lengthy delays.
The load itself is 18 feet
wide and weighs 190,000 pounds. It is unlikely, given the size of
the load itself, that passing by motorists on the various
interstates will be possible, and that traffic may be stopped at
various times and locations on S.R. 2 to allow the superload to
proceed safely. 7-18-02
