Repair shuts down plant for two weeks The Associated Press
NORTH PERRY, Ohio (AP) -- The Perry nuclear power plant will remain
shut down for the next two weeks for repair.
FirstEnergy Corp. spokesman Richard Wilkins said a rotor in the main
generator must be replaced. The rotor is not related to the nuclear
portion of the plant.
The problem was discovered while the plant was reduced to 25 percent of
its generating capacity over the weekend for scheduled maintenance,
Wilkins said Tuesday.
Perry is one of three nuclear plants owned by Akron-based FirstEnergy.
Its Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in Oak Harbor has been shut down
since February after inspectors found leaks allowed boric acid to eat a
hole in the 6-inch steel cap that covers its reactor vessel.
FirstEnergy plans to install a replacement reactor head and restart
Davis-Besse by the end of December.
