FirstEnergy Corp.
(NYSE:FE) has decided to close Unit 4 of its Edgewater Plant, which
is located in Lorain County.
FirstEnergy said most of the
plant's 17 employees will have the chance to relocate to other parts
of the company. FirstEnergy will continue to operate the Edgewater
Plant's two, 24-megawatt combusion turbines remotely from its nearby
West Lorain Plant.
Donald Schneider, VP of fossil operations
for FirstEnergy, said the decision to close the unit was consistent
with the company's strategy of focusing on larger plants and newer,
more efficient peaking units. The boiler of Unit 4 was fired by
natural gas and was used mainly when customer demand was highest.
