A group of Congress members are calling for FirstEnergy officials
to consider "repowering Davis-Besse with an alternative source of
fuel."
The letter, posted Monday on the Ohio Citizen Action Web site, is
signed by four of Ohio's representatives in the U.S. Congress --
Marcy Kaptur, Dennis Kucinich, Sherrod Brown and Stephanie Tubb
Jones.
Ohio Citizen Action first started the cry last week to replace
Davis-Besse's nuclear reactor with a coal- or gas-fired method of
producing electricity.
FirstEnergy officials dismissed the request, saying the utility
is focused on keeping Davis-Besse nuclear.
The letter written by the Congress members implores FirstEnergy
to reconsider, "in the interest of public safety and a strong future
for FirstEnergy."
It calls for a task force of engineering and financial
specialists to at least explore the idea, citing successful
transitions at plants such as the Zimmer plant near Cincinnati, the
Pathfinder plant in Sioux Falls, S. D. and others.
