NEW YORK, Dec 12 (Reuters) - A federal grand jury in
Chicago indicted a unit of FirstEnergy Corp (FE) for wilfully
violating federal workplace safety rules, the Wall Street
Journal reported in its online edition on Thursday.
The jury made the ruling in a case -- which prosecutors
said was the first of its kind -- involving the electrocution
deaths of two employees of FirstEnergy unit L.E. Myers Co. in
separate incidents in suburban Chicago, the newspaper said.
Since 1972, L.E. Myers Co. has seen 37 of its workers
killed on the job since 1972, according to the newspaper
report.
FirstEnergy, Akron, Ohio, owns L.E. Myers through its MYR
Group unit, which was also named in the indictment, and both
L.E. Myers and MYR Group plan to challenge the charges, the
Journal said.
A FirstEnergy spokeswoman was not immediately available to
Reuters for comment.
