Workers maneuver a replacement reactor head
into the containment plant at the Davis-Besse nuclear plant near Oak
Harbor, about 25 miles east of Toledo.
Crews took out the old
reactor head yesterday through a large hole cut into the reactor
building's side, at left, and moved it to another part of the plant,
where it will be analyzed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said
Richard Wilkins, a spokesman for FirstEnergy Corp., which owns the
plant.
Leaking acid corroded a steel cap that covers the
reactor vessel, forcing a shutdown of the plant. FirstEnergy is
spending $55 million to $75 million on the project.
The
replacement reactor head came from a never-completed nuclear plant
in Midland, Mich.
