with gun at nuclear plant
OAK HARBOR, Ohio - A man trying to enter the
Davis Besse nuclear power plant yesterday with a loaded handgun
under the seat of his van was charged with two misdemeanor weapons
offenses, Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies said.
Horace
Makodym, 54, of Parma, Ohio, was charged with carrying a concealed
weapon and improper transportation of a weapon. He was being held in
the Ottawa County Jail in lieu of $8,000 bond.
Mr. Makodym,
an unemployed security guard, had applied for a job as a guard at
Davis Besse and arrived about 12:30 p.m. yesterday for a scheduled
interview. A loaded 9mm handgun he once used as a security guard was
found during a routine search of the vehicle. He told a Carroll
Township police officer he didn’t believe it was illegal to
transport a loaded gun in that manner.
Agents from the FBI,
the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Toledo
Bomb Squad, and a dog trained in detecting explosives from the
University of Toledo were summoned after trace amounts of an
explosive were detected in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle
turned up no explosive materials or other suspicious items,
authorities said.
