Cincinnati City Council will soon review its options regarding the curbside recycling program, in preparation for its annual budget cycle. Options include reducing pick up to every other week, keeping the program as-is or enhancing it to position the city to increase revenue and reduce waste management costs in the long term.

Dear Councilmember,

As you contemplate and debate the 2010 budget, I urge you to make sure that plans proceed to enhance our curbside recycling program.

We should not be paying to throw recyclables into a landfill next year when we could instead be saving money on garbage collection, hauling and tipping fees by increasing our investment in recycling. Putting an enhanced program in place now will also position us to actually make a profit, once the recycling markets rebound.

Right now, when our economy is stressed and budgets are tight, is the perfect time to make investments in conservation, efficiency and job creation. Right now is the time to enhance our curbside recycling program.

Sincerely,

Don't trash the 'Nati
