Environmental activist O'Connor dies
by Doug Hanchett

Saturday, December 1, 2001

Wealthy environmental activist and one-time Bay State congressional candidate John T. O'Connor of Cambridge died yesterday afternoon from an apparent heart attack. He was 46.

Co-founder of the National Toxics Campaign, O'Connor ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998, losing in the 8th District Democratic primary to former Somerville Mayor Michael Capuano, who went on to win the seat.

O'Connor was most recently mentioned as a potential candidate for lieutenant governor.

The family of O'Connor, who died in Cambridge, issued a brief statement yesterday saying the death was ``sudden and unexpected.'' Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.

O'Connor is survived by his wife, Carolyn G. Mugar, brothers Jeff of San Diego and James of Saugus, sister Emily of Washington, D.C., and his parents, Kay and George of Stratford, Conn.
